Diane’s latest film, Welcome to Marwen hits theatres tomorrow, December 21st. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, Welcome to Marwen follows the true story of Mark Hogancamp, a man struggling with PTSD who, after having his memory erased from being physically assaulted, creates a fictional village to ease his trauma. The film stars Steve Carell, Leslie Mann, Diane Kruger, Merritt Wever, Janelle Monáe and Gwendoline Christie. Take a look below at what the critic’s early reviews are saying about the project:

Empire Online – A genuine oddity, Welcome To Marwen may not hit the emotional highs but mixes high-concept fun with a sincere attempt to describe trauma in an original visceral way. And [Robert] Zemeckis’ filmmaking remains exemplary. It doesn’t completely work, but it’s a studio picture that swings for the fences. And in this day and age, that is to be applauded.

Rolling Stone – Everything is over-scaled for the wow factor, and while i’ts easy to admire the handiwork of [Robert] Zemeckis and his tech crew, they seem to be admiring it, too — while losing track of the story’s humane core in the process. Welcome to Marwen isn’t hack work; there are ideas buried beneath its high-gloss surface and relentless uplift. But good luck trying to dig them out.

IndieWire – In trying to celebrate the healing powers of art, Zemeckis has created a sometimes fun, often morbidly compelling, and always ill-advised testament to the ways in which those healing powers can create problems of their own. For all of its CGI wizardry, the drama of Welcome to Marwen winds up feeling as artificially manufactured as the miniature figurines who bring it to life.
